Eddie Van Halen was one of the most influential figures in rock history – so it’s no surprise that rock’s biggest names are paying tribute to the legendary guitarist’s death.

Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar tweeted “Heartbroken and speechless.  My love to the family.”

KISS’s Gene Simmons – who helped boost Van Halen in its early days, described Eddie as “not only a Guitar God, but a genuinely beautiful soul”.

Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello called Van Halen “One of the greatest musicians in the history of mankind”, while Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx called him “the Mozart of rock guitar”.

AC/DC guitarist Angus Young says, “Eddie was a guitar wonder, his playing pure wizardry. To the world of music he was a special gift.”

Metallica also released a statement saying they considered Eddie, “an inspiration, an idol, and after spending a summer together on the road in ’88, a friend.”

Van Halen died Tuesday at the age of 65 after a long battle with throat cancer.
